Self-made millionaire TJ Rodgers has set out to attempt to create the best Pinot Noir ever. If you’re a wine lover, you’ll recognise how fickle crop is to ripen. It’s undoubtedly the most alluring grape but the hardest to get right. This is because it’s difficult to ripen, if it’s too hot it will ripen too quickly and in cooler climates it will hardly ripen at all.

So, How Does Mr. Rodgers Intend to Carry Out This Task?

After years of building, he has constructed three tunnels arranged one above the other to help the flow of the wine and enhance the taste.

Mr. Rodgers wishes to create his wine using traditional techniques from Burgundy in the 1830’s. Some of these methods involve foot crushing the grapes and being gentle with the wine wherever possible. Pumps are avoided. The facility is known as a gravity winery. Essentially, this means that the wine will ferment in the top cave, the wine then flows down into barrels which are stored in the cave directly below.

Despite the traditional techniques, technology plays a vital role to ensure the crops get the ideal amount of water. This means the grapes should be at their peak when harvested.

However, attempting to create the best wine in the world doesn’t come cheap. The French Oak barrels used at Clos de la Tech are thought to cost $1000 each.

Mr. Rodgers hopes that by using these thorough techniques he will be successful in creating the best Pinot Noir on the market.

More About the Wine

If done right, Pinot Noir is one of the most tempting and enticing wines money can buy.

It possesses a natural pale and delicate hue. Cherry and raspberry also makes an appearance. Over time, Pinot Noir matures in the bottle developing delectable silky undertones.

Traditionally, the best of the wine is grown on the South-East facing hills of Côte d’Or, Burgundy and is not usually produced in California.
